30 May 2020
Because of the public health emergency, Merton Green Party meetings have migrated from the pub to Zoom. On 13th May 2020, we were fortunate enough to be joined by Natalie Bennett, former Green Party Leader and now Member of the Lords. Natalie gave us a really interesting insight into her work as Baroness Bennett of Manor Castle and then answered questions on: what replacing the House of Lords with an elected second chamber might look like; how Green Members collaborate with other Members of the Lords; whether there is support for Proportional Representation amongst Members of the Lords; the relationship between the public health emergency, the climate emergency, and systemic inequalities in society; how we can make sure that an economic recovery does not come at the cost of actionon climate breakdown; and working with community groups.
We learned a lot and were inspired. Merton Greens thank Natalie for all of her hard work and for taking the time to talk to us. We are very happy that she is representing the Greens in the House of Lords.
Following the success of this online event, we are pleased to announce that Professor Molly Scott Cato, former South West England Green MEP, will be joining us on 10th June to talk about the idea of a Universal Basic Income.
