We are absolutely delighted to announce that Dr Philippa Zielfa Maslin has been chosen to be our candidate in the St Helier by-election on 6 May.
Pippa first moved to the St Helier ward from the Philippines in 1977 and has had a varied career, including teaching English in state secondary schools for thirteen years and tutoring in Media Arts at university while completing her doctorate. She is currently a caseworker for a local Deaf and Disabled People's Organisation.
Since returning to the ward in 2013, she has thrown herself into civic life - campaigning to save St Helier Hospital, working with neighbours to beat down an unfair major works bill from their housing association landlord, organising lots of litter picks, working with residents to oppose the inappropriate use of Morden Park by the Council, and successfully petitioning the Council to declare a Climate Emergency.
Pippa said, “I am delighted to be standing again in St Helier. I want to make where I live better for everyone. I am driven to help others and, over the years, have gained the kind of experience and skills that I think will help me to represent my fellow residents’ best interests effectively.
The last time that I stood, I increased the Green vote by 400%, overtaking the Lib Dems at the same time. Now my target is to overtake Labour and put St Helier on the map in the Civic Centre. Every vote for me is a vote to clean up our streets, help local businesses to thrive and get the empty units filled, ensure that our parks and green spaces are maintained to the highest standard, help housing association tenants and leaseholders to obtain quality services from their landlord, and enforce the 20mph speed limit on Central Road, Abbotsbury Road, Middleton Road and London Road.”
We can't wait for you to get to know Pippa better over the next few weeks. Do get in touch if you have any questions or concerns you'd like to put to Pippa - she really will respond to each and every one.
